Gutter Guards and Wildfire Embers in Fresno

CAL FIRE's home-hardening guidance tells homeowners: "Check your gutters! Clean gutters regularly and install noncombustible gutter covers on gutters." It states that a gutter without a cover can collect debris and become highly susceptible to embers and fire. Here is what the guidance says, what a guard does about it, and what a guard does not do.

The Short Answer

Keep the trough clear and put a noncombustible cover over it. A cover keeps dry leaves and larger debris out of the trough, which is the material the guidance warns about. It does not make a house fireproof, and it does not replace cleaning, because fine debris still collects. A metal guard is the style that matches the guidance.

What CAL FIRE Says About Gutters

The guidance on the CAL FIRE home-hardening page covers the roof and its attachments. In its words, the roof is more susceptible to embers and flame because of its large surface area. It lists debris on the roof as a weak point, especially next to vulnerable areas, and says to keep the roof clear of debris and vegetation.

On gutters it says four things:

  • Check your gutters, and clean them regularly.
  • Install noncombustible gutter covers.
  • A gutter without a cover can allow debris to accumulate, making it highly susceptible to embers and fire.
  • If the debris catches fire, it exposes unprotected combustible areas of the roof assembly.

It adds that, at a minimum, a noncombustible gutter cover should go on to reduce the buildup of debris, and that the roof should have a metal drip edge that completely covers the space above the gutter system.

Why the Dry Months Matter in Fresno

NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Fresno Yosemite International Airport put the summer season at 0.27 inches of rain and an average high of 95.2°F. A trough that collects leaves in the spring and autumn holds that material dry through the summer, because nothing washes it out. Dry leaves, seed pods and roof grit are the debris that guidance describes.

That sets the order of work: clean in autumn, before the rain and before the following dry season builds up. How often to clean gutters in Fresno lays out the schedule.

What a Noncombustible Guard Is

Noncombustible means the material does not burn. Aluminum and steel guards fit that description. Foam and brush inserts, which sit inside the trough, do not, so we do not use them where the fire guidance applies. Gutter guards in Fresno lists the guard styles we fit.

Guard style Material Fits the CAL FIRE guidance
Perforated metal cover Aluminum or steel Yes, noncombustible
Metal mesh over a frame Metal screen in a frame Depends on the frame, so we check what the frame is made of
Reverse-curve metal hood Aluminum Yes, noncombustible
Foam insert Foam in the trough No
Brush insert Bristles in the trough No

What a Guard Does Not Do

A guard reduces the debris in the trough. It does not stop every ember, it does not protect the roof surface, and it does not fix the other weak points the guidance lists, such as vents and eaves. The guidance names the vents under attic and crawlspace as access points for embers. A guard also does not replace cleaning, because fine grit and seed heads can settle on its surface, and the run underneath still needs a check.

We say this on the estimate: the guard goes on a run that works, it keeps the large debris out, and the house still needs the roof, vents and eaves handled by the rest of the guidance.

What We Do on the Visit

First, we clear the trough and check the run for sagging sections, loose hangers and open joints. Second, we measure the run, check the drip edge above it, and note how the guard needs to fit. Third, we fit a noncombustible guard along the run and fasten it. Finally, we run water through the gutter and tell you what the guard keeps out. What a Guard Costs

Fixr's national guide puts gutter guards at $69 to $600 per job, with a $335 average, updated January 31, 2025. This Old House reports an average of $39.71 per linear foot, or $7,941 for 200 linear feet, with the middle half of respondents paying $4,138 to $6,000, on a page updated October 6, 2026. The two use different methods, so read them as separate measures, not one price. Those are national figures, not Fresno quotes. The length of the run and the guard style set the price, and an on-site measurement gives the number.

Frequently asked

Frequently Asked Questions

CAL FIRE's guidance is to install noncombustible gutter covers and to clean gutters regularly. A cover cuts the debris that collects in the trough. Whether your house needs one depends on the trees and the roof, and we look at both on the estimate.
