Mosquitoes in Gutters in Fresno: What to Check

Standing water in a gutter gives mosquitoes a place to lay eggs. We check the trough and the drain vents on every visit, because those are the two places water most often sits without draining. Clearing both on the same visit removes the water they need.

The Short Answer

Check the trough for wet debris and the drain vents for standing water. Clear the debris, flush the downspouts and confirm the vents drain. Mosquito control in Fresno County is handled by local districts, and the Consolidated Mosquito Abatement District covers 1,058 square miles of central and eastern Fresno County, according to its service area page. The Fresno Westside Mosquito Abatement District covers western Fresno County. Madera County has its own district.

Why a Gutter Holds Water

A gutter holds water whenever it cannot move it to the outlet. Four things cause that most often.

  • Debris packs into the trough and forms a dam.
  • A section sags between its hangers and keeps a pocket of water after each rain.
  • A downspout outlet or elbow blocks, so the water backs up into the gutter.
  • The run has lost its fall, so the water settles in the middle and never reaches an outlet.

Each of these leaves water sitting for days, which is long enough for mosquitoes to use it. The sag and the lost fall are repairs, not cleanings, so a clean trough on a bent run can still hold water. See gutter repair in Fresno.

When the Water Sits

Fresno's winter rain is the main source of that water. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Fresno Yosemite International Airport put annual precipitation at 10.99 inches, and the winter season gets 5.88 inches of it. A gutter that drains badly in those months holds water through the wet season.

Summer is the other case. The summer season gets 0.27 inches of rain, so a trough that holds water in July is being fed by something other than rain, such as irrigation overspray, a roof-edge sprinkler or a leaking downspout joint. We look for the source when we find standing water in a dry month.

Where Water Collects in a Gutter

Spot What it looks like What to do
The trough Wet, dark debris packed in the bottom Clear it by hand, then flush the run
Low sections Water standing between two hangers after rain Check the fall and reset the section
Drain vents Debris in the opening or water around it Clear the vent and watch the water run out
Downspout elbows Water backing up at the top of the downspout Clear the elbow and flush to the outlet
Corners and joints Debris caught at a seam Clear the joint and check the seal
Splash blocks and extensions Water pooling where the downspout ends Reset the block so water runs away from the house

Check the Drain Vents on Every Visit

Drain vents are the openings that let water leave the gutter. A vent that is blocked holds water, and a vent that sits in standing water is one of the first places mosquitoes start. We clear each vent, pour water into the trough to watch it run out, and tell you if a vent keeps blocking. A vent that keeps blocking usually means the trough above it is holding debris, and the cleaning fixes both.

What a Gutter Guard Does and Does Not Do

A guard keeps leaves and larger debris out of the trough, which removes some of the material that holds water. It does not replace checking the drain vents. A guard can also trap fine grit on top of its surface, so the guard and the vents still need a check. Gutter guards in Fresno covers the fit and the cost ranges.

Who Controls Mosquitoes in the Fresno Area

Mosquito control in the Fresno area is run by local districts. The table comes from each district's own pages.

District Area Contact
Consolidated Mosquito Abatement District 1,058 square miles of central and eastern Fresno County (559) 896-1085 or (800) 821-1577
Fresno Westside Mosquito Abatement District Western Fresno County Use the contact details on the district's site at fwmad.specialdistrict.org
Madera County Mosquito and Vector Control District Madera County. The page text we read does not define the boundary (559) 662-8880. Service requests go through the district's site

Neither Fresno service area page names the City of Fresno, and the Madera page does not name the City of Madera. To confirm which district covers your house, use the address map on the district's site or call. The Madera district says it works within its boundaries and relies on residents calling in mosquito sources. Call the district for mosquito control, and call us for the gutter itself.

What We Do on a Cleaning Visit

First, we walk the run and mark the trough, the low sections and the downspout outlets. Second, we clear the debris from the trough and the corners. Third, we clear each drain vent and flush each downspout to its outlet. Finally, we pour water into the trough to check the run drains, and we tell you what we found. Gutter cleaning in Fresno covers the full visit and the cost ranges.

They can. A gutter that holds water, whether in a trough full of wet debris, a sagging section or a blocked drain vent, gives mosquitoes a place to lay eggs. Clearing the debris and clearing the vents removes that water.
